£10,600 made in 'Best Show Yet'
Described as "probably the best show we've ever put on" by the organisers, Helston Motor Show was a runaway success on Sunday (June 17). Despite not seeing best of weather, the clouds did not deter a huge number of people attending the event. The rain held off for the majority of the day - only breaking at around 4pm - as the traditional Father's Day Treat saw whole families visiting the show and enjoying the many activities on offer. Mick Timpson, who co-ordinated the Packet-sponsored event, said: "It went very well indeed. It was probably the best show we have ever put on. There was such a variety in all the entertainment and there was a real buzz about the place. It was very busy and we're very pleased." Over the course of the day the main stage saw a wide variety of acts, including Helston School Jazz Orchestra, Arabian dancers and the hilarious Black Barrows - a spoof on the Red Arrows flying display with wheelbarrows instead of aeroplanes. Crowds were particularly drawn to the two headline acts - Dougie Bray's Wheels Revolution show, which included the new Grizzly vehicle that ran the length of the field on its two back wheels, and Guinness World record holder Terry Cole, who performed breathtaking stunts including using a Samurai sword to chop a cucumber balanced on a member of the public. His act also included rolling a metal frying pan up and ripping a telephone book in half. Unfortunately, Terry was unable to carry out his world record attempt - breaking paving slabs while lying on broken glass - due to the rain making the attempt too dangerous. Also attending the event were a range of new car dealerships, which received a great deal of interest, as well as over 150 classic cars. Trade stands reported being busy throughout the day, while the catering outlets were in such demand that they ran out of bread rolls and had to send out for more supplies. A new area for this year was the Kid's Corner, which saw children's entertainers Blossom the Clown and Terry the Magician, complete with his puppet friend Stinky Poo the Elephant, entertaining the tots. Mr Timpson said this was a successful addition that would definitely be continued next year. The day closed with the Culdrose Volunteer Band sounding the last post. Mr Timpson thanked everybody who was involved in the event. Next year will be the tenth anniversary of the event and plans are already underway to make it the best show yet.
