Bikes, Bounce, Boogie!

Putting the motor into this year's Helston Motor Show will be Fred Flanagan and his company Cornwall Bike Restoration. Fred, an aircraft engineer at RNAS Culdrose for the last 20 years, runs a company at the Angel Centre in Tyacke Road that is paid to finish bike restoration projects that have petered out through lack of funds, knowledge or enthusiasm.

At this year's Motor Show, sponsored as always by the Packet and being held for the second year at Wendron Cricket and Football Club, Fred is organising a light-hearted bike show for enthusiasts to come and win prizes. In his own words: "Bring your pride and joy and let the world see your efforts!" Prizes will be awarded for the best British bike, Japanese bike and street bike, as well as best in show and Cornwall Bike Restoration's favourite bike. Fred, who has been involved in the Culdrose bike club since 1990 has been club chairman on and off for the last ten to 15 years, said: "My involvement in motor shows stems from a desire to provide a platform for local bikers to display their 'pride and joy' in a relaxed and enjoyable forum.

"Hopefully we will attract enough attention to provide an event where local bikers can come together, meet and chat to other bikers about their bikes and generally raise awareness of the thriving classic bike scene in Cornwall."

In addition, a nationally acclaimed dance group will be performing at this year’s Helston Motor Show and they will be joined on stage by Helston school children. Sweet Flava, who were born out Flava, made famous on hit TV show Britain’s Got Talent, will be dancing at the motor show at Wendron Football and Cricket Club on June 21.

As well as the usual full display of classic cars and motorcycles, this year’s event is putting an emphasis on music, dancing and fun. The entertainment does not get much better than Sweet Flava, who have competed all over the country and have gone as far as Los Angeles for dance events.

If bikes are not your thing the show on June 21 - Father's Day - has plenty of other attractions to keep the whole family entertained from 10.30am until 5pm. The emphasis this year for the stage and arena events is on music, dancing and fun and there are going to be several comedy acts. Acts include the Norman the Doorman comedy trampoline act, Professor Goodvibes Punch and Judy show, Wendron Silver Band, Circus Skills for Children and Martial Arts display. Among the dance acts are Misty Mountain Line Dancers, The HillBillies duo comedy western skills act, Teresa Blee Dancers and Ocean Academy of Dance. Children from Parc Eglos School will be carrying out several performances at various times during the day and there will be numerous trade stalls to keep the whole family occupied with a range of food available including the unbeatable hog roast.

There is a host of fairground rides especially for children as well as bouncy castles, rodeo bull riding and a surf riding contest. There is plenty of parking at the showground, off the main Helston to Falmouth road between Rame and Carnkie, and a special bus service will be running from Helston to and from the show all day.

All proceeds from Helston Motor Show are split between Wendron Football Club and Parc Eglos Primary School. Event supported by Packet Newspapers, part of the Newsquest Media Group. Website designed and maintained by Ben Timpson.
